Principal's Message

THIS WEEKEND'S HOLY GOSPEL ACCORDING TO LUKE

Jesus made the crowds welcome and talked to them about the kingdom of God; and he cured those who were in need of healing. It was late afternoon when the Twelve came to him and said, ‘Send the people away, and they can go to the villages and farms round about to find longing and food; for we are in a lonely place here.’ He replied, ‘Give them something to eat yourselves.’ But they said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless we are to go ourselves and buy food for all these people.’ For there we’re about five thousand men.
But He said to His Disciples, “ Get them to sit down in parties of about fifty,’ They did so and made them all sit down. Then He took the five loaves and two fish, raised His eyes to heaven and said the blessing over them; then He broke them and handed them to His Disciples to distribute among the crowd. They all ate as much as they wanted, and when the scrap’s remaining were collected they filled twelve baskets.  GOSPEL OF THE LORD.

REFLECTION - GOSPEL

Last weekend, our Parish concluded the celebration of First Holy Communion for our children. It was a wonderful time for the children and their families. But, try to remember - OUR OWN First Holy Communion. How sincere we were, how reverent, how faith filled, and how we always wanted to receive Jesus in Holy Communion.
It is a timely reminder for all of us to consider when we, as a family, received the Body of Christ and  Church to pray before the Blessed Sacrament at Mass. As well, considering a Holy Hour before the Blessed Sacrament. The Feast of “Corpus Christi”. (Body and Blood of Christ) is a great time to ask ourselves a these questions.
There is an old saying; you are what you eat! This weekend's feast challenges us to become what we eat at Eucharist. The Body of Christ’. AMEN! Are we becoming more and more the living flesh and blood of Christ in a spiritually starving world?

WALK WITH CHRIST - HAPPENING THIS SUNDAY

Part of the life of discipleship we are each called to is inviting others to follow Christ, and one of the most profound ways we do this is by publicly expressing our faith with one another and to the wider community. We have a unique opportunity to do this on Sunday (June 22) at the annual Walk with Christ, Eucharistic procession beginning at 2:30 p.m. at the corner of Martin Place and Pitt St. Before the procession, a family-friendly festival will take place at Martin Place beginning at 1:00 p.m., with music and entertainment for families and parishes to connect.

By processing with the Blessed Sacrament past important institutions, including our parliament, courthouses, hospitals, and businesses, we make known the reality that Christ’s presence is everywhere, inviting all to be transformed by his love.

CARPARK REMINDERS

Once again, we remind all parents of the need to be safe in our Gloucester St carpark. There are still a number of examples of extremely dangerous behaviour with students and families all at risk. We strongly urge you to follow the rules and be mindful of safety at all times. Please be mindful of the following:

• adhering to speed limits
• using the crossing to walk your child from your parked car to the gate
• using the correct parking bays
• turning left onto Gloucester St

Our boom gates will be operational into the Mount St entrance very shortly. This serves as a timely reminder that that carpark is for staff of John the Baptist and Freeman College on school days.

Dear Parents,

Semester One Reports

School reports are important because they help parents stay engaged in their child’s schooling. They help parents to set and maintain high expectations, talk to their child about school and support and encourage their learning. All of these strategies have been shown to help students do better academically.

Your child's Semester One Report will be available via Compass at the end of Week 9. You will have an opportunity to meet and discuss your child’s growth and progress with their teacher throughout Week 10 - bookings can be made via Compass. 

A common grade scale is used across all NSW Schools. This grade scale goes from Basic - Thorough in Kindergarten and Limited - Extensive in Year 1-6. The grade given to each student is informed from a variety of assessment tasks, in class learning and teacher observation.

• What are 3 great things about your experiences at school?
• What do you feel when you read your report? What part of your report makes you happiest? 

Entering Absences on Compass

It is important that parents are entering valid reasons for student absence as soon as possible after the absence date. 

 If you require assistance in entering absences via compass, please read the attached instructions. 

 If your child brings home an unexplained absence notice from the school you can either:

1. enter the absence details via compass and discard the notice
2. complete the notice, providing reason for absence and return this to your child's classroom teacher

Religion News

All parents are invited to attend our celebration of John the Baptist Feast Day. We will celebrate with mass, open classrooms and a picnic lunch. Students will resume normal class at the end of lunch. 

Holy Communion

For Catholics, the sacrament of the Eucharist is a sacred meal where we break bread and share one cup. Unlike Baptism, which happens once, receiving Communion is an ongoing practice to be celebrated throughout our life. It is a holy time of worship when we gather as one body to remember and celebrate all that Christ has done for us.

We offer our heartfelt congratulations to the students in our school community who have recently received their First Holy Communion. We pray that as they continue to grow in faith, they may always feel the love and presence of Jesus in their lives and be strengthened by the gift of the Eucharist.

ICAS News

Dear Parents,    

We are delighted to inform you that John the Baptist will be participating in the world-renowned ICAS Competition this year.

ICAS is designed to assess students’ higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills in English, Mathematics, Science, Writing, Spelling Bee and Digital Technologies.

Each assessment celebrates students’ accomplishments by providing opportunities for recognition and development. Every student will receive a printed certificate and an online results report. Top performers will be eligible for medals. 

We encourage you to consider entering your child into ICAS this year.

 Our school has signed up for the ICAS Assessments parent payment system (PPS) for all tests. Through this system parents can pay for ICAS directly online. All tests will still be held at our school. Please use the following details to register your child and make payments by no later than Monday 28th July 2025.

We pray, sing and share a story together before a craft activity. All are welcome to attend and this is a great opportunity for parents to meet each other and the children to make friends before starting school, building friendships and connections with each other in a faith filled space.

Joseph Fatherhood Initiative

On Wednesday 11th June over fifty fathers and children gathered for a night of pizza, games and faith. The night was a great success with all agreeing it was a great way of connecting with each other.

Vinnies Winter APPEAL- NOW ON! Send in your donations!

This year we are assisting with the Vinnies Winter Appeal by donating various items which can be given to both families or those living on the streets in our local area.

A Gentle Reminder: The Power of Positive Transitions!

Dear Parents and Carers,

As we draw on what has been a busy and productive Term 2, I wanted to take a moment to gently remind you about something we discussed early in Term 1: the vital role of effective transitions in creating a positive and supportive learning environment for all our students.

You'll recall that at John the Baptist, we are proud to implement Schoolwide Positive Behaviour for Learning (SPBL). This framework guides us in fostering an atmosphere where every child can thrive. Our core expectations – "We are Safe, We are Responsible, and We are Respectful" – are the cornerstones of everything we do. These expectations truly come to life during transitions, those crucial moments when students move between activities or locations throughout their school day.

Why are transitions so vital?

Think of transitions as the crucial bridges connecting different parts of our school day. When these bridges are crossed smoothly and thoughtfully, they pave the way for successful learning and a harmonious environment for everyone. Here's a reminder of why they're so important:

• Setting the Tone for Learning: A calm and organised transition from the playground to the classroom helps students seamlessly shift their focus from play to lessons. It allows them to settle, mentally prepare, and be ready to engage.

• Ensuring Safety: Moving safely between areas, whether walking calmly in lines or using designated pathways, is paramount. It prevents accidents and keeps everyone secure.

• Building Responsibility: Transitions are a fantastic opportunity for students to demonstrate responsibility. This includes listening to instructions, following routines, and being mindful of those around them.

• Showing Respect: Respectful transitions involve showing consideration for others, avoiding disruptions, and following the teacher's directions. This simple act creates a positive and inclusive atmosphere for our entire school community.

• Reducing Anxiety: For some children, transitions can be a source of unease. Having clear routines and expectations provides structure and predictability, which can significantly reduce stress and help them feel more secure.

• Maximising Learning Time: When transitions are quick and efficient, we maximise the precious time available for teaching and learning, ensuring every moment in the classroom counts.

How can you help at home?

Your partnership in reinforcing these skills is incredibly valuable. Here are a few ways you can support your child with positive transitions as we head into Term 3:

• Reinforce our SPBL Expectations: Discuss with your child the importance of being safe, responsible, and respectful during school transitions.

• Encourage Active Listening: Remind your child to listen carefully to their teacher's instructions, especially during transition times.

• Practice Routines: If your child finds transitions challenging, consider practising simple routines at home. For example, moving calmly and orderly from playtime to homework, or from one activity to another.

• Positive Reinforcement: Celebrate and praise your child when they demonstrate good transition habits! Acknowledging their efforts goes a long way.

• Open Communication: If you have any concerns about your child's transitions at school, please don't hesitate to speak with their teacher. We are always here to help and work together.

Eisteddfod News

We are delighted to congratulate our amazing JB Choir students who recently took part in the Sydney Catholic Schools Vocal Ensemble Eisteddfod!

Students from Years 1-6 represented John the Baptist with pride, showcasing their vocal talent, dedication, and love for music. This Eisteddfod gave our young singers the chance to perform in a professional setting, listen to other school choirs, and be part of a vibrant musical community.

We are so proud of every student who participated - their commitment to rehearsals, their confidence on stage, and their beautiful harmonies were truly inspiring. Your hard work and enthusiasm have brought great joy to our school community. Bravo, choir!

There’s a first time for everything—and this year marked an exciting milestone for our rising star

performers at John the Baptist. On Thursday, 19th June 2025, our talented Drama Club students took to the stage for their ensemble performance at the prestigious Eisteddfod!

With unwavering dedication, these students poured their hearts into every rehearsal. They gave up countless recesses and lunch breaks, rehearsing tirelessly, perfecting every line, movement, and expression. Their commitment and teamwork were nothing short of inspiring.

And their efforts paid off—when the curtain rose, our John the Baptist stars shone brightly! Their performance was captivating, confident, and full of energy, earning well-deserved applause and recognition from the audience and judges.

I could not be prouder of each and every one of them. Stay tuned—we can’t wait to bring this incredible Drama performance to our school community soon!

SCHOOL FEES

Your 2025 school fee statements have been emailed to you. It would be appreciated if your payments are made by the scheduled dates as listed on your statement.

Payments can be made by CompassPay, BPay, Cash, Eftpos or Centrepay.

Your co-operation is greatly appreciated!

CENSUS DAY  

From time to time, we are required to provide student details and background data to Government agencies, particularly during Census time. Our school will be undertaking these processes during August. For more information regarding this, please refer to the SCS Privacy Policy and Standard Collection Notice.

Kindly note, you are not required to do anything for these collections, however, it is important that your personal records are up to date. For your convenience, the Personal Details Form is available in your Compass Portal - Favourites, anytime changes occur and the school is to be informed.

Please contact the school office 9823 5042 for any communication with the Canteen. 

LOST PROPERTY

We have numerous items of clothing collected every day, they are placed in our lost property basket in the office.  All labelled items are returned to the child's classroom and items which  which are unlabelled go to the clothing pool.  

Please ensure you re-label any clothing your child is able to remove at school as markings can fade over time.

Please ensure ALL of your children's items are labelled including drink bottles, lunch boxes and containers as we have numerous lost property items collected every day which remain unclaimed and ultimately have to be thrown away.

Parents, should you wish to make a purchase of good quality second-hand clothing at any time, a reminder you may do so via your Compass Favourites link via the Clothing Pool Order Form.

Alternatively, you can call the office and place an order via telephone, email info@jbbonnyrigg.catholic.edu.au or complete the form below and return it to the office with your child. 

The clothing pool welcomes donations of school uniforms. Please ensure that all items are clean and in good condition (no rips or stains as we have no washing facilities). Only official school uniform items are accepted and please note we cannot accept socks or stockings.
